Sappi Forests

Environmental Manager for Mpumalanga

Qualifications:

  • BSc Botany and Zoology
  • BSc Honours Biodiversity and Conservation
  • MSc Environmental Management
  • BSc Honours Biodiversity and Conservation

Forestry career: 6 years

As the Area Environmental Manager, my key responsibilities include the review of national forestry standards for certification and to adapt company policies and procedures to conform to those standards. I also continually review environmental legal requirements and investigate current impacts of forestry operations on the environment. Through my technical expertise and specialist knowledge, I further advice on operations and share ideas, where we can collaborate to either change and adapt procedures or find new ways to improve our systems. A third of Sappi land holdings are natural areas and I conduct and manage environmental monitoring for these open areas in Mpumalanga. In addition, I always promote environmental awareness to internal and external stakeholders through forum meetings, conferences and regular consultation.

WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING IN FORESTRY?
It gives me pride to represent Sappi and this industry, where sustainable management of our earth’s resources is always at the forefront in developing new technology or processes to improve our business. It is ever-evolving, alongside the pressures presented by our planetary boundaries, where we find a balance between providing quality products and ensuring resources for future generations. Not to mention the opportunity to work in nature, where we contribute and conserve as custodians of important natural environments.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO WOMEN THINKING ABOUT A CAREER IN FORESTRY?
Due to the amount of woman that work alongside me in all departments and aspects of forestry operations, I would like to encourage woman to consider forestry as a career path and express to them that there is most definitely a multitude of career opportunities in forestry. You do not necessarily require the brawn, just your passion to make a difference in this industry, on whatever key qualities or talents you have.
